How scanning works

Features

Scan a code instead of typing one

Point the camera at a minifigure bag or a set box, and BrickDb names what is inside.

Collectable minifigure bags carry a DataMatrix rather than a barcode, so a QR scanner finds nothing on them and reports a camera problem. BrickDb reads both. Point the camera at a bag and it names the figure; point it at a boxed set and it reads the retail barcode and finds the set. It works in the browser, and in the BrickDb apps for Windows and for Android 8 or later. In the browser it works without a barcode too: photograph the box and BrickDb reads the printed set number off the photo. None of it needs an account, which is rather the point: the moment it is worth most is standing in a shop.

Two kinds of code, two decoders, one answer. Which sort you happen to be holding is not something you should have to know.

What you can do

  • It reads the DataMatrix on collectable minifigure bags and the retail barcode on set boxes.
  • You can type a code in by hand when the camera cannot read it.
  • It needs no account.
