A catalogue's identifier for a part's shape, independent of its colour.
A part number identifies a shape: the 2 × 4 brick, say, whatever its colour. Catalogues grew up separately, so the same part can carry different numbers from one site to another. BrickDb follows the numbers of the catalogue it is refreshed from. See also design ID and element ID.
