How the blind-bag scanner works

Features

Name the figure without opening the bag

Point the camera at the square code on a collectable minifigure bag, and BrickDb names the figure inside.

Collectable minifigure bags and boxes carry a DataMatrix, a small square code made of dots, rather than a barcode, so a QR scanner finds nothing on them and reports a camera problem. BrickDb reads it. Aim the camera at one bag, sweep it along a shelf, or scan several boxes at once, and BrickDb names each figure. The F1 Collectible Race Cars and the Mighty Machines are sold the same way and carry the same kind of code; for those BrickDb names the set. It works in the browser, and in the BrickDb apps for Windows and for Android 8 or later. None of it needs an account, which is rather the point: the moment it is worth most is standing in a shop.

Two kinds of code, two shapes: the square DataMatrix on a bag, and the bars on a set box. This scanner reads the square one; the set-box scanner reads the bars.

What you can do

  • It reads the square DataMatrix on collectable minifigure bags and boxes, and on the F1 and Mighty Machines boxes.
  • You can type the code in by hand when the camera cannot read it.
  • It needs no account.
